Dollar Stores Get More Shoppers
When the 2008 recession hit our community, many Americans started to rely more heavily on the Dollar Store retail chain to buy cheaper goods.
After fourteen years, a similar pattern is showing up. Shopping at the Dollar Store chain’s locations, many shoppers are trying to offset the cost of record high gas prices and the fastest growth in inflation in 40 years.
Inflation has surged with the consumer price index rising by 8.3 % in the past 12 months ending in April. This means the cost of basic essentials is eating away at people’s paychecks.
Since the Great Recession, many Dollar Store locations have grown faster than nearly all the other retailers, adding thousands of stores every year.
With gas prices at $5 per gallon, many people are trying to drive to nearby stores to do their shopping, especially for food items.
As the economy continues to spiral downward, more people will go to the Dollar Store and try to save money. Consumers are clearly feeling pinched by inflation and looking to stretch their dollars.
Today these Dollar Stores are mostly run by Asian businessmen. The stores are not too big and can be run by a few employees. Most of their products are made in China and because of the trade war between the U.S. and China, the duty on the goods has really made it difficult for them to have profits like before.
With the change and uncertainty of globalization, the world is facing energy and food storage problems. If these problems cannot be solved in the short term, it will have serious consequences for the whole world.
